July 22 to 25 Trip

Posted July 26, 2012 by John Kelsey

Last trip’s blog made a prediction that there were a lot of big fish to come, and we are happy to say that we were right! We managed to follow up last week’s heroics with even more stunning catches. It was only a three-day trip, but in that time our guests managed to catch three gorgeous Chinooks 50 pounds or more, and three more that eclipsed the 40-pound mark!

As is becoming the norm, the trip started off with a bang, with Timothy Martin catching and releasing a 45-pound Chinook under the guidance of his guide Kai. The fish was foul-hooked, and the fight took—without exaggeration—an hour and a half! And not much time passed before the next big one came courtesy of Norm Gerlich, who caught and released a 40-pounder with his guide Brian, capping off a great first day.

Then things jumped up a notch on the second day, with Norm dramatically building on his previous day’s catch. This time he was fishing with Butch as his guide when he brought in an amazing 57-pounder! He had been fishing off of Snake Rock, and it was an incredible fight that ended with a proud and healthy release! But we weren’t done for the day, as just before the clock hit noon, Dillon Healey, also guided by Kai, managed to pull in a 41-pounder before releasing it to continue its journey home to its natal stream.

With only a half day remaining, we thought things would cool down slightly, but they did just the opposite, heating up again to yield two more 50-pounders and another 40! The first came courtesy of Doug True, who caught and released a 50 pound Super-Tyee with his guide Catfish off of Yates Bay. Then it was less than an hour before Catfish was on the radio again with more release measurements, this time in Doug’s son Dustin’s name, who caught a 42-pounder in nearly the identical spot. Not wanting to miss out on the action was Lloyd Kirilenko, who was fishing right beside them with his guide Rick. Sure enough, they were in the right spot, because it wasn’t long before Loyd was able to snag a gorgeous 52-pounder, capping the trip off in style.

Well, as you can see, it has been a wild week here at Peregrine Lodge, with some of the best fishing we’ve seen in years. We are all excited to keep it going!
